We keep receiving books for review from various publishers. However some books are of such paramount importance that we at the journal office thought one review may not be able to do justice to that book. One opinion may be slanted, perhaps by the individual tastes and preferences of the reviewer. Reviewers from different continents, nations, even different parts of the same nation may perceive a book differently. Why not send books to two or more different reviewers and get their opinion. We requested several authors/publishers to do that and they gladly obliged.
In our sister publication "Anil Aggrawal's Internet Journal of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology", we have been featuring books for quite some time now. However in THIS journal, we started featuring books (reviews from multiple experts) only from Vol. 1, No. 2 (July - December 2002). We hope to continue featuring books in our subsequent editions.
Taking the lead from our sister publication, from the second issue we started reviews of certain books of paramount importance as "featured books". The first book to be featured on our journal was The Second Highest World War - The Rama Theatre by Anoop Chandola (Published by Authors Choice Press, an imprint of iUniverse, Inc.), which was published in Vol. 1, No. 2 (July - December 2002) of this journal. If readers' reactions, and emails are any indication, this feature was a tremendous success.
In Volume 2, Number 1 (January - June 2003), we featured Eternal Treblinka written by Charles Patterson, which proved to be an all time hit. It was reviewed by as many as 11 reviewers from 8 different countries and 5 different continents.
In the last issue (Volume 2, Number 2, July - December 2003), we featured Silver Creek written by A.H.Holt, which proved to be an all time hit. It was reviewed by 3 reviewers from 3 different countries (all different continents).
This time we received several remarkable books, and we chose a number of them for our "featured reviews" section. One was Marriage Intimacy: New Approaches, which as been featured on page one. The second remarkable book that we received this time is called AIDS: What the Discoverers of HIV Never Admitted - Is AIDS really caused by a virus", by Lawrence Broxmeyer, MD.
It advocates a theory which can only be considered sacrilege by most modern scientists - that AIDS is NOT caused by HIV; it is caused by a mycobacterium instead. And before you start clicking away from this page, let me hasten to tell you that Broxmeyer has been successful in having this theory published in a reputed medical journal "Medical hypotheses" [Broxmeyer L (2003) Is AIDS really caused by a virus? Medical Hypotheses;60(5):671-688]. This journal is being published since 1975, and is indexed by one of the most reputed abstracting services - Index Medicus.
When this book came to us, the foremost question before us was, whether we should expose Broxmeyer to the same Galilean Inquisition, which the famous astronomer faced four centuries back or show more tolerance and let his ideas be scrutinized by luminary lights across the world. Back in 1632, when Galileo was forced to recant his statement that the earth moves, it was an age of intolerance (legend has it, Galileo at the end of his recant, whispered under his breath "Eppur si muove" - and yet it moves). We don't live in an age of intolerance anymore. It would be much better to expose his ideas to a wide cross-section of people across the world.
Keeping this in mind, we at the journal office sent the book to five different reviewers around the world spanning four continents. As usual with our featured books section, the reviewers were requested not only to send us detailed reviews, but were asked to rate this book on a scale of ten. The following rating scale was provided to the reviewers.
