This interesting book tells us about the struggle of The Reverend Thomas A. Reed III to free himself from the trappings of the ministry and the 'collar', which in Tom's own words, was "waiting for me at birth". It gives us an insight into the life of the clergy in the Episcopal Church, or any church, for that matter. The journey of a boy who has been 'pre-ordained' for having been born into a family of ministers, from birth to Confirmation to College to Seminary to Ordination and finally to having his own church- the St. Luke's Episcopal Church; despite the inner turmoil and his doubts about the Church, has been described beautifully in a clear, simple, light and lucid manner. Most of the doubts and questions raised by Tom pertain to the Church's dark history-"things like Inquisition, Crusades, heresy, trails, witch burnings, those kind of things", which even now nag us at the back of our minds. The final freedom, that he achieves with the help of 'Ma' is really a description of one's perseverance and inner strength.

Tom's interactions with different kinds of people, particularly the ladies, and the influence they have on him, have been brought out nicely in a witty manner. Some times the mind is filled with an urge to pat him on the back and say "cool buddy, everything's going to be fine!"

All in all, the book makes an immensely wonderful reading, something that you wouldn't want to take a break from, till the end.
