Last Rites by Charles Patterson is a narrative that relates about a young man named Tom Reed, who from the very beginning of his life was brought up by a family with strong religious background and beliefs.. His father was a minister, while his grandfather the bishop. As he grew in age so did his expectations. He set himself a target to achieve what his father and grandfather had set. His family life was in trouble when his father didn't lobby for the post of bishop, a post which his mother wanted so much. He followed his father's footsteps and became a minister. But as life proceeded his anger towards his mother was seen when she married the bishop after the death of his father. He began to search for life outside the influence of the church. In the end, he decided that being a minister was not his choice. He went against the church and renounced his ministerial post and became a normal being without the influence of the church in his life.
Patterson's Last Rites is a well narrated crafted story which deals respectfully with the church and is an interesting bedtime reading book which keeps us guessing till the end.
