(Editor's Note: Ruchi Rai's Review of Ophthalmology is turning out to be a bestseller, breaking all records. When we reviewed the first edition of this book in this journal, the book was already doing extremely well, but no one - not perhaps even the author and the publisher - must have thought that the book would do so exceedingly well! Yielding to the constant demands of the ophthalmology community around the world, the author has now come out with an updated second edition of her book. Quite obviously we did not want to invite the earlier reviewers to review this new edition (we already knew their opinion). So we looked around for fresh reviewers and this time requested two different students to review this book...)
We keep receiving books for review from various publishers. However some books are of such paramount importance that we at the journal office thought one review may not be able to do justice to that book. One opinion may be slanted, perhaps by the individual tastes and preferences of the reviewer. Reviewers from different continents, nations, even different parts of the same nation may perceive a book differently. Why not send books to two or more different reviewers and get their opinion. We requested several authors/publishers to do that and they gladly obliged.
In our sister publication "Anil Aggrawal's Internet Journal of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology", we have been featuring books for quite some time now. However in THIS journal, we started featuring books (reviews from multiple experts) only from Vol. 1, No. 2 (July - December 2002). We hope to continue featuring books in our subsequent editions.
Taking the lead from our sister publication, from the second issue of this journal (Volume 1, Number 2, July - December 2002), we started reviews of certain books of paramount importance as "featured books". The first book to be featured on our journal was The Second Highest World War - The Rama Theatre by Anoop Chandola (Published by Authors Choice Press, an imprint of iUniverse, Inc.), which was published in our last issue. If readers' reactions, and emails are any indication, this feature was a tremendous success.
One of the most important books to hit the literary scene in recent times is Review of Ophthalmology, 2nd edition written by Ruchi Rai. Dr. Ruchi Rai came out with the first edition some years back, and just in a few years all copies were lapped up by ophthalmology students around the world.
So important has this book been, that it has been recommended by most professors of ophthalmology to their students. Although the book would be useful to all ophthalmology in practice, it is particularly helpful to students appearing for the MD/MS entrance examinations.
The first edition of this book, which came out in 2006 was also featured in this journal. At that time this book was reviewed by two other reviewers - Abhishek Bansal and Jeevak Gupta.
A book with such a mass appeal ought to be examined by more than one reviewer. We at the journal office sent the book to two reviewers. The reviewers were not only requested to send us detailed reviews, but were asked to rate this book on a scale of ten. The following rating scale was provided to the reviewers.
0: Waste of time
1: Of minimal interest
2: Of little interest
3: Of some interest
4: Slightly below average
5: Average
6: Slightly above average
7: Good
8: Very Good
9: Excellent
10: Truly Outstanding
By and large, our reviewers rated the book above 8. Here is a detailed break-up of our reviewers and the ratings they gave this book.
