Reading the 8th edition of “Robbins and Cotran Pathologic Basis of disease” has been a wonderful experience for me. I believe this book is a very thoughtful & reader friendly compilation that delivers complex information in an explicit manner. There is an overall updated & expanded text & hundreds of new & colourfull illustrations & this has been made possible by including several new contributors, there are total of 25 contributors in the current edition.
It discusses pathology under 2 sections i.e General & Systemic. Moreover, chapters in each section have sequential arrangement of the topics & subtopics in the beginning which fascinates the readers towards exploring them in detail. The content is highly elaborated & clear leaving no jewel out of the crown . Highly lucid diagrammatic & schematic presentation have not only made the text more explanatory but also behold & further arouse , the interest of the reader throughout the book. The book is burgeoning with real photographs providing both gross & microscopic view, explanatory line diagrams and few memorable anecdotes that support & enhance the textual descriptions.

In the beginning of certain paragraphs, questions are asked which are answered subsequently, this tends to arouse curiosity & maintain the interest of the reader. Eg: In Ch-3 “Tissue renewal, regeneration & repair”, “Given the multiplicity of VEGF effects & the diverse mechanism that regulate the expressions, how do endothelial cells develop into a perfect pattern of vessels during angiogenesis?. At the end of each topic eg; in case of pathogenesis of disease, it provides with a brief summary enabling better assimilation of all the contents & thus proves to be a definite advantage for exams preparation. At the end of each chapter, references are given for certain topics & subtopics enabling highly detailed learning among all thos who devours book.

The content is radically & thoroughly revised, succinct and accurate to such an extent that it would be hard to find error even by an eagle eyed reader. As compared to the previous editions, in addition to the revision & reorganization of the text, many new photographs & schematics have been added & a large no. of the older ‘gems’ have been enhanced by digital technology. Moreover, in order to maintain the book at a reasonable size, girth & weight of this book has been reduced by trimming out about 80 pages still the content is neither too brief nor redundant.
As it’s well known that the field of pathology is an ever evolving one & this book provides full fledged explanation encompassing all recent & relevant advances in the subject, making it a “ connosiers delight”. Since, it is hard to find such qualities inclusive in any other book, I strongly recommend this book not only for the undergraduate students but also for the pathologist in training & all practitioners of medicine with intellectual curiosity.
